Activities on articles about hedgehogs and salmonella
1. Identify the terms in the New York Times article. How easy/difficult is it to identify them? Have you got any doubts about the terms you identified? If so, what are the problems?
2. Use the following resources:
a. English Wikipedia https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hedgehog
b. Encyclopedia Britannica https://www.britannica.com/animal/hedgehog-mammal
c. Italian Wikipedia https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erinaceinae
d. Enciclopedia Treccani http://www.treccani.it/enciclopedia/riccio_%28Enciclopedia-Italiana%29/
On the basis of the information you get by comparing sources in English and Italian, decide whether pet hedgehog is a species of hedgehog or not. Then do the same for riccio di campagna.
If pet hedgehog/riccio di campagna are not a species/the same species, use the same materials to identify what a pet hedgehog is called in Italian. If you cannot find enough information there, use the web and list all the sources you look up. Finally state what a pet hedgehog is called in Italian.
3. Use dictionaries in the eLexico (https://www.elexico.com) platform to find out whether riccio and porcospino are synonymous in Italian and, if so, in what contexts they can be used as synonyms. List all the sources you used and describe your process.
4. Make a list of hedgehog/riccio and their related terms: synonyms, hypernyms, hyponyms and/or co-hyponyms.
5. Another issue concerns the use of germs in connection with salmonella. Using the resources above and any other reliable sources you can think of, state the relation between germs, bacteria and virus and germi, batteri and virus in English and Italian. describe what you did and finally state whether germi can be used in Italian and in what contexts.
6. Decide what changes need to be implemented in the article by La Stampa.
