Courses

The course will explore the evolution of global tourism from 1840 to the present, examining significant historical developments such as the Grand Tour, colonial tourism, and the rise of mass tourism. Participants will study the experiences of tourists and communities in tourist destinations and investigate the power structures at play, focusing on critical dimensions like race, class, and gender. Additionally, students will learn about the development of tourism infrastructure, including developments in transport, accommodation, information structures, and tourist activities.
Students will engage with historiography to understand how historians have interpreted tourism over time, and they will engage with various primary sources, such as travel diaries, guidebooks, advertising materials, magazines, and photographs, to develop critical analysis skills. They will establish primary source analysis and interpretation skills, learning to ask meaningful questions while contextualising them within broader historical frameworks. In addition, they will practice writing historical arguments.
