Corsi

This course offers a broad and engaging introduction to the history, culture, and literature of Islamic Iberia (al-Andalus) and medieval Sicily, two of the most vibrant contact zones of the medieval Mediterranean. Students will explore how Arabic language and literary traditions flourished in these regions and how they interacted with Latin, Greek, and emerging Romance cultures. The course surveys major historical developments alongside an accessible introduction to Arabic poetry and poetics, key genres, and leading authors, while also tracing the transmission of themes, forms, and ideas into European literary traditions. No prior knowledge of Arabic is required. By the end of the course, students will gain a clearer understanding of how Islamic intellectual and artistic production shaped the cultural foundations of medieval Europe and contributed to the shared literary heritage of the Mediterranean world.
