Narrative has expanded far beyond literature and now involves visual and performative arts, as well as other discursive practices (e.g. journalism, politics and advertising). This course is an introduction to the languages of storytelling, from the literary tradition to digital narrative. Classes will focus on the main issues of narrative theory across media (such as narrativity and narrativization; inter-, cross- and transmediality; adaptation and remediation; possible worlds, immersivity and interactivity). Through the analysis of some paradigmatic cases, the course will outline the complex forms of remediation between different artistic languages, clarifying the features of the contemporary “convergence culture” among media and this culture’s contradictions.
