Enrolment options

Applied sciences to cultural heritage materials and sites professionals active in Europe should be capable of understanding the legal issues relevant in: the safeguarding of cultural heritage (in time of peace and in time of war) ; the protection of goods of cultural significance within Europe, including the regimes regarding transnational (licit and illicit) circulation of such goods; the challenges faced by States and heritage stakeholders in relation to the restitution claims of works of art and cultural goods looted in armed conflicts and/or unlawfully removed.

She/he should manage complex legal principles and rules involved in assessing such questions in an international and transnational dimension where Europe is either the origin of the goods, or their destination, to an extent sufficient to reach specialist legal advice/seek adequate cooperation with authorities, having in sight the possible outcomes of an individual case.

Special focus wil be devoted to the following issues:
a) Forgery in the art sector: legal context and consequences
b) Restitution and repatriation in the framework of the decolonization issues
c) The responsibilities of museums, collectors and heritage professionals regarding stolen / looted cultural goods: due diligence issues and ethical dilemmas.
d) Nazi-Looted Art: focus on specific cases and the role of European Union Law
e) Access to, participatory processes and the role of civil society in the safeguarding and valorization of cultural heritage


Materials will be made available on the Moodle platform; PPP will be uploaded ; selected readings will be suggested from legal journals accessible to unipd.it domain users
