English Literature 1 (M-Z)
These classes are meant to give students an introduction to sixteenth- and seventeenth-century English literature, especially drama and poetry, focussing on "The theatre of passions: Macbeth, Doctor Faustus, and a few other madmen".
The exam will be an oral interview and will take place in English. It will last approximately twenty-five minutes. First the student will be asked to choose a topic (a text among those studied in class, or a topic concerning more than one text, or an author, or a critical perspective); subsequently, the lecturer will ask the student to read and analyse a passage among the ones studied and included in the syllabus; from this, there will be a short discussion on the topics and themes studied during this course.
Assessment will be based on the candidate's knowledge of the texts and topics included in the syllabus, as well as on his/her competence in analysing and discussing the texts analysed in class and inserted in the bibliography. The student shall also demonstrate his/her ability to take into account critical interpretations of the texts and contexts on the basis of the critical literature suggested. The student's logic and argumentative abilities shall be assessed, together with his/her ability to form an independent critical judgement.

Analysis of the historical and social context, with a survey of the main authors and literary trends. An analysis of a choice of texts from the Henrician, Elizabethan and Jacobean periods.
