    Restorative Approach and Social Innovation:

From Theoretical Grounds to Sustainable Practices

    7th - 8th November 2018, University of Padova, Italy

    • We are pleased to announce a call for papers for the international conference Restorative Approach and Social Innovation: From Theoretical Grounds to Sustainable Practices to be held at the University of Padova, Italy the 7th - 8th November 2018.

The conference will address different topics of the contemporary debate on Restorative Justice with special interest on the theoretical aspects that appear to be relevant from an anthropological and philosophical point of view. Moreover, part of the discussion will be dedicated to the possible deriving restorative practices. The general aim is to show how the key elements of Restorative Justice can represent valuable tools to deal with the matters of our everyday lives. In these terms, the Restorative Paradigm would lead to a restorative way of living life.

This interdisciplinary conference will host many national and international experts on the subject, including some distinguished keynote speakers such as Ivo Aertesen, Brunilda Pali and Howard Zehr.

      Call for Papers

The conference will include four parallel sessions that will address some of the topics that characterize the contemporary debate on Restorative Justice. Therefore are looking for contributions that deal specifically with the paradigm of Restorative Justice from its theoretical focal points to all its possible applications within the legal system, but also to other relevant situations. Those interested to present original contributions should submit a long abstract in English (2000 words max) of the proposed presentation. Every selected author will be granted 20 minutes for presentation, plus 10 minutes for Q&A. Abstracts should be sent to restorativejustice.unipd@gmail.com by August 3rd, 2018. Notification of acceptance (or refusal) will be communicated within three weeks after the deadline of the call for papers.

Contributions regarding the philosophical and anthropological grounds of Restorative Justice will be highly appreciated. The panel sessions will focus on issues outlined in the questions below. Abstracts that would consider the following issues will be highly appreciated:

      1. Theoretical Analysis of the Restorative Approach

      • The different categorizations of evil in contemporary society. How is harm caused by all kinds of conflicts generally understood? In addition, what are the resulting needs of the people involved in these conflicts?
      • What are the obligations of those involved in a conflict (offender, victim, community)? How is this relevant from a moral philosophical point of view?
      • How is it possible to foster the engagement of those involved in restorative processes?
      • The relationships between philosophical traditions and the core elements of Restorative Justice. Classical issues in Moral Philosophy and the contemporary debate on Restorative Justice.
      • Does a Restorative Process always need the couple “victim-offender”? Is it possible to apply the Restorative Paradigm also to the asymmetric forms of justice (“distributive” and “legal”, according to their classic definitions)?

      2. Restorative Justice Beyond Law (Restorative Living)

      • Restorative Approach as a cultural paradigm. Is it possible to expand RJ beyond its usual fields of application (Legal Systems)?
      • What is (or would be) the role of Restorative elements in the sphere of Education?
      • What is (or would be) the role of Restorative elements in the sphere of Social Work?
      • What is (or would be) the role of Restorative elements in the contest of Public Administration and in the organization of companies and firms?
      • Is it possible to delineate restorative ways of dealing with conflicts in our everyday life? Is it possible to intend restoration as a way of living (contra retributive way of living)?

      3. RJ Within Legal Systems: Parallelism vs Compatibilism

      • When it comes to legal systems what is the role of Restorative Justice? Does it substitute Retributive Justice (Parallelism) or does it work along with it (Compatibilism)?
      • Can we really do without violence in juridical systems?
      • Restorative Justice and Probation: limits and unexplored opportunities.
      • Juridical limitations to the application of restorative practices in domestic violence cases.
