Dott. Marco Vorcelli
PRIMA LEZIONE: 30 ottobre dalle 14.30 presso AULA F via Obizzi, 21
Le lezioni successive si svolgeranno ogni giovedì, dalle 14.30 alle 16.30, sempre in Aula F del Palazzo Ex-ECA (Via Obizzi, 21, 35122 Padova PD)
Syllabus
Objective:
The main objective of this class is to help students familiarize with formal English, both spoken and
written, especially as it is employed in the academic field of philosophy. Students will learn the nitty-
gritty of academic English and develop basic abilities such as reading and scanning through publications,
writing different types of texts, following lectures in English, and speaking English appropriately and
effectively in academic contexts.
Method:
The class will be highly interactive and will try to replicate an English-speaking environment. Thus, no
artificial separation between reading, writing, listening, and speaking will be enforced, but we will work
on the four basic skills simultaneously. If necessary, some grammar and vocabulary “training” will be
done. No prerequisites are required other than a school-level familiarity with English.
Contents:
How can “just” reading a text help me improve my writing and speaking?
Deliberate practice on expressions, idioms, collocations, patters, “chunks”
What does good writing consist in? About clarity, brevity, and style
The art of writing: Writing short texts, receiving feedback, and making progress as a writer

Is language just in the brain? Tips and tricks to sustain formal conversations in a foreign tongue
