Translation! Festival is a celebration of languages and cultures that will take place throughout the day on Friday 29th September 2017, at Exeter Public Library, Exeter Phoenix, and the Royal Albert Memorial Museum.
A range of thought-provoking, exciting and interactive events will celebrate the uniqueness and diversity of languages and cultures, and give the public a chance to discover the innovative ways of translating between them … the written word and beyond!
There will be a range of talks, workshops and sessions to suit all ages and interests, run by local and international experts.
Roll up your sleeves and help bring a French illustrated novel alive in English with the Spectacular Translation Machine, an all-day live translation event, or take in an exhibition of Italo-Australian Angela Cavalieri’s heteroglossic artwork and get a chance to talk to the artist. You can find out about how translation intertwines with migration, politics, ethics, and even keeping dead languages alive in our Discover Translation talks, or listen to readings by internationally-acclaimed writers and poets, such as Darina Al-Joundi and Alexei Makushinsky, alongside their translators. Learn about translation as transmission, and how this influences museum acquisitions. Enjoy translation duels in Spanish and in French, and learn from such award-winning translators as Timothy Adès and Rosalind Harvey. Experiment with different languages by playing multilingual treasure hunts—Wordkeys: The 4D Translation Game—and multilingual board games. Enjoy film showings, poetry performances, music and pop-up readings throughout the day.
