This week's writing task: Finding rhizomes where they hide

To practice a cartographic posture and the e-ducation of the gaze in the terms we will discuss next week, the proposal for this first exercise is:

1 - Walk for half an hour without a final destination, without headphones and without looking at your cell phone.

2 - During the walk, be affected by some non-human object. Pay attention to this object and the force exerted on you.

3 - Write a short text of less than a page about this object in two versions:

3.1 - First, a text in the format or with the structure defined by Deleuze and Guattari as the tree paradigm.

3.2 - Then, write the same text, about the same object, but the text will now be constructed in a rhizomatic way.

You can write digitally, but it might be more interesting to write on paper since it is something to do while walking. If you are going to write on paper, you can hand it to me directly when you are finished. If you are going to write on the computer, I will open a folder here in Moodle so you can upload your texts.

Have fun! sorridente

Divertiti! sorridente

Replying here to Benedetta's question on the last post:

My doubt on the assignment concern the format. From what I understood we have to write two texts, one text needs to be in the format of a tree and the other one in the format of a rhizome. What I did not get is if we have to actually draw the text as a scheme, or simply write it.

You are right, the idea is to write two texts with the same content and about the same object. One of them is going to be a tree-text, that is: a text with a beginning, middle, and end, in which each part depends on the other, and which has a center, an ordering principle, an entry point, and an exit point.
And the second is going to be written in a different shape or form, without these hierarchical boundaries.

The point of the exercise is exactly that there is no "right way" of doing it (also because every way is going to produce a "wrong" text). You can imagine plenty of forms to make your text lack a center, entry point, exit point, and in which "the conclusion is present in the introduction" as D&G state.

If you wanna read a little bit about how they wrote their rhizome-book, here's the text where they speak about this.

But what I can say is that I would not put it in terms of "drawing as a scheme" or "simply write it". Both ways can produce trees and rhizomes, and I would say there are many other interesting ways of de-structuring your text. Keep in mind that there is no right answer, so you can take this (rather rare) opportunity to experiment in edgy and creative ways.

In other words, it's a good idea to wander not only through space on the 30-minute walk, but try to wander also in your writing, to experiment, to make drafts. My best advice is to try to have some fun with the assessment, to play with it... Nothing will come from bureaucratic writing, from google or chatGPT, this I can guarantee. This time you will really have to think, so enjoy it at least 😜

"Good morning, professor. Thank you for the instructions, but I have an additional question. After completing my work digitally, I am not sure where to submit it, as I don’t see a dedicated space for submission. Could you please explain where I can submit it? I apologize and wish you a good day."
