Il 20 marzo, dalle 12:30 alle 14, presso il Salone Maldura, la prof.ssa Sharon Macdonald (Humboldt Universität, Berlino) terrà un seminario dal titolo ‘With the passing of time….’ Difficult Material Culture in Germany and beyond.
Focusing especially upon the material cultural heritage of National Socialism in Germany, this lecture considers changing approaches to dealing with difficult heritage. It looks first at when and why pasts that are troublesome for contemporary senses of identity come to be commemorated at all. Germany is a significant case here as it is often said, with good reason, to have led the way in looking at its own dirty historical laundry, especially in public settings such as museums and memorial sites. This does not mean, however, that the addressing of the past is always adequate or without limitations and silences, as will be discussed. The lecture then turns to other changes over time, particularly those of generational changes, and especially the loss of first-hand survivor witnessing. It looks at how museums and heritage sites have responded to the consequences of the finding of more everyday fascist material culture – such as books and memorabilia – in people’s own family inheritances; and at changing sensibilities of audiences and the uses of new display media, such as ‘virtual survivors’. Finally, the lecture considers the potentials and uses of artistic approaches in addressing such difficult heritage.
Siete tutti cordialmente invitati.
