Community, Locality and Cultural Heritage is a course about the relationships between culture, living heritage and local development.
The main goals of the course are to understand how culture and heritage can become resources for local development, to explore the relationship between Intangible Cultural Heritage and Sustainable Development, and to acquire a basic understanding of the UNESCO listing mechanism for inscription on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.

Welcome to Cultural Encounters!
We will explore the history of early professional fieldwork through the experiences of women ethnographers. We will look at their trajectories through the lens of mobility, gender and intersectionality, considering how class, marital status, nationality and other social positions shaped their opportunities to travel, conduct fieldwork and enter the emerging profession of anthropology.
In the second part of the course, we will focus particularly on the British anthropologist Beatrice Blackwood. Her remarkable professional and personal trajectory will allow us to connect individual mobility with the wider circulation of people, objects, photographs and knowledge within colonial anthropology.
We will then follow the afterlife of her ethnographic work in museum collections, focusing especially on photographs she took among the Kainai Nation in the 1920s and on their later return and reconnection with the people and communities represented in them.
Through this case, we will address some broader questions that are central to anthropology today: colonial collections and their legacies, the making of ethnographic knowledge, processes of museification, and contemporary practices of restitution and reconnection.

The course unit Space, Cities and Development 2023-2024 has been renamed COMMUNITY, LOCALITY AND CULTURAL HERITAGE.
The content of the new course concerns the process of heritage-making which communities perform within the safeguarding cultural policy of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization).
"Transhumance, the seasonal droving of livestock along migratory routes in the Mediterranean and in the Alps" is the case study I selected to provide a deeper understanding of the key notion of Intangible Heritage.
In 2003, the UNESCO Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage represented a landmark shifting from the eurocentric notion of monumental heritage, fixed in an enclosed space/time, to a more inclusive grid of classification thus focusing on living cultural practices of local communities traditions.
This course adopts critical and constructivist approach to cultural heritage. The primary aim is to critically explore the ways in wich cultural identity discourses and practices are performed within UNESCO and heritage communities, considering in particular issues of authenticity, tradition, sustainable development.

3. Visit to the Museum of Human Anatomy 'Luigi Rolando' and to the Museum of Criminal Anthropology 'Cesare Lombroso' at the University of Turin (travel date to be arranged).
